Here is some background information on the various temperature scales.

The Celsius Temperature Scale:
The Celsius temperature scale is commonly referred to as the centigrade scale. It is called this because the centigrade scale was used to measurement the freezing point and boiling point of water by designating a 100 degrees or units between the two points. By 1948, the term Celsius was frequently being used and today is probably the most widely used scale in the world. One drawback of the Celsius scale is temperature in the negative digits are very common, thus the need for the Kelvin scale. Converting from Celsius to Kelvin is as simple as using the conversion tool provided above.

The Fahrenheit Temperature Scale:
The Fahrenheit temperature sis the temperature scale most commonly used in the United States. With this scale the freezing point and boiling point of water is measured at 32 degrees and 212 degrees Fahrenheit, respectively. If you live in the United States, the weather report you receive will be in Fahrenheit. Also, thermometers that are used around your home will typically measure temperature in Fahrenheit. Conversely, if you from another country it is very possible the scale you are used to is the Celsius scale. Conversion from Fahrenheit to Celsius is achieved instantly with the conversion tool above.

The Kelvin Temperature Scale:
The Kelvin temperature scale is based on the premise that the coldest temperature can get is this theoretical absolute zero. Although this temperature has not been confirmed, scientists in the lab have come very close. This absolute zero or -273.15 degrees Celsius is set to zero on the Kelvin scale. This is the temperature, theoretically, at which all molecular motion would cease. Now that’s cold! To go from the Kelvin scale to another temperature you start by added 273.15 degree to the Celsius temperature. Converting Celsius to Kelvin can also be achieved by using the temperature conversion tool above.

The Reaumur Temperature Scale:
The Reaumur temperature scale is somewhat obsolete and specific to certain measurements. This temperature scale measures the freezing point of water a zero and the boiling point is reached at 80 degrees.

The Rankine Temperature Scale:
The Rankine temperature scale is basically the Kelvin scale except it uses the Fahrenheit degree as opposed to the Celsius degree. Mostly used in the scientific community, otherwise it has no practical use.
